HEALTHY & ECO-FRIENDLY MENSTRUATION

'MAKE A CHOICE'

Disposable sanitary pads are health as well as an environmental hazard. Through primary research, it was found out that not many people are aware of these facts. Also largely people I could interact with were clueless about the alternatives available which are healthy and ecofriendly. Through ‘Make A Choice’ I want to make people aware of these choices they have. I have designed an information booklet that can be distributed independently or can accompany talks/seminars/discussions.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

1. Conducting semi-structured Interviews

I interviewed 4-5 Peers (students 22-27 ages), 2 Neighbours (40-45 ages), Garbage Collectors, BBMC ward officer, Columbia Asia staff

2. Field Visit

Insights & Observation

1. While hospitals and wards have designated bins and waste sorting systems, such systems are not implemented at the household level to segregate, collect and dispose of sanitary waste.

2.Garbage collectors have to manually sort sanitary waste and are not trained to handle sanitary waste differently

3.Most people are not aware of the environmental and ecological hazards of the menstrual products they use.

4. Those of the few who are aware of sustainable menstrual products don't know about the availability and accessibility of these products.

DESIGN INTERVENTION

To design and map the efficient sanitary waste collection system & create communication material to provide information about healthy & sustainable menstrual products

Suggestions & Directives based on research

sanitary new booklet-12.jpg

According to SWM
2016 rules, sanitary
waste should be considered under Domestic Hazardous waste.
Awareness should be created at public level and government level.

• Manufacturing should be responsible for collecting back waste generated
by their production.
• A minimal amount of user
fee may be charged for
proper management of process

• Different color code bags
should be followed for sanitary waste.
• There should be different
sanitary waste collector van
or a different compartment
for this waste in same van.
• Fine should be charged to
the people involved in waste management process for improper working.

• According to WHO guidelines, sanitary napkins
should be incinerated above 800 degree celcius.
• Proper emission control
system should be placed.
• Feasibility check should be
done on government level
to see whether they can be
used in W2E plants or any
other process as per its calorific value.
• Proper rules should be
enforced for illegal sanitary
landfilling and other harmful practices like low temperature incinerator.

’Most users weren't aware of the alternative or where to find them. Hence a leaflet was designed that gave information about alternative products, available sizes, price and online/ offline locations that manufactured or sold the make a choice’
