DESIGN THINKING WORKSHOP CURRICULUM

Develop curriculum for design thinking workshops for grades 1-12th for next academic year.

Work Process

​

Designing differently for each grade (in terms of themes, structure and activities)

Even with the provided toolkit and prescribed design thinking process, framework of presenting it to children changes with their age group. Themes, activities, level of complexity and workshop structure was designed differently

for each group of grade 1- 4, 5- 9, 10-12th.

 

For Grades 1-4 – emphasis on craft-based activities

  • Relatable themes introduced through stories, poetry and animation films.

  • Process of design thinking introduced through small challenges through storey or poetry that poses a problem that children can solve. (e.g. Humpty Dumpty challenge- How can you save Humpty dumpty from breaking? how can you save humpty dumpty from falling down?)

  • Concepts of brainstorming, empathy introduced without the jargon through games and craft activities.

  • The facilitator is required to build ideas with the class and ensure the prototypes are made in class.

 

Grades 5-9 – emphasis on introducing design thinking stages through introductory activities.

  • Explaining each stage and relevant terms

  • Interviewing skills, understanding empathy, research skills.

  • Developing ideas, ideating different solutions, visual representation of ideas.

  • Contextualizing solutions, designing systems

  • Working in teams

  • Sharing and presenting their own work.

 

Grades 10- 12- emphasis on dealing with complex problems, presenting implementable designs.

  • Working with the community, conducting primary research.

  • Developing systems thinking approach

  • Mapping different levels of stakeholders, working systems, deciding intervention points.

  • Display advance level of thinking understanding and research.

  • High fidelity prototypes

  • Teamwork

 

Within these frameworks, 12 plans are created based on different themes. Flexibility for facilitators, detailed instructions, additional resources for references are included.
